CNC machine tools are the most commonly used equipment in subtractive machining, which processes materials by automatically controlling the tool's path through a computer. When you need custom parts manufactured, understanding the different types of CNC machines available can help you make informed decisions about your project. Each CNC machine type offers unique capabilities, and choosing the right one is crucial for achieving optimal results in terms of quality, cost, and delivery time.

What is a thermoset?

When a thermoset is heated or cured, it undergoes irreversible chemical crosslinking when heated or cured, forming a rigid three-dimensional network structure. Once a thermoset is cured, it cannot be remelted or reshaped. Common examples include epoxy resins, polyurethanes, and phenolic resins. They offer excellent heat resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical strength, making them ideal for applications like automotive parts, electrical components, and composite materials where durability is essential.

What is a thermoplastic?

Thermoplastics are polymer materials that can be repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling. Their molecular chain structure is relatively simple. When heated, the molecular chain moves more rapidly, and the material becomes soft and plastic; it solidifies again after cooling. This reversibility makes thermoplastics have excellent processability and recyclability.

What is the Difference Between Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Plastic?

The main difference between thermoplastics and thermosets is their molecular structure and how they change when heated:

Thermosets: Thermosets form an irreversible three-dimensional cross-linked network during the curing process. Once cured, they cannot be remelted or reshaped - heating causes degradation rather than softening. They have excellent heat resistance and dimensional stability, but are not recyclable. This property allows thermosets to replace metals in certain use scenarios.

Thermoset Application Cases

In the aerospace industry, epoxy-based carbon fiber composites are widely used to manufacture aircraft wing structures and fuselage panels. About 50% of the primary structure of an aircraft is made of advanced epoxy resin materials. These thermosetting epoxy composites have excellent strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue resistance, and maintain excellent dimensional stability under extreme temperature changes (-55℃ to +82℃). It can maintain structural integrity even under high stress loads and will not soften or deform during flight.

Thermoplastic Application Cases

In the automotive industry, polypropylene (PP) is widely used to manufacture car bumpers or exterior parts. This thermoplastic material has excellent impact resistance, lightweight characteristics and excellent paintability. Its key advantages are recyclability and repairability - damaged bumpers can be easily recycled or repaired through heat welding. In addition, PP's flexibility allows it to absorb minor impacts without cracking, while its low density reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, helping to improve fuel efficiency.
