Custom Injection Molding Plastic Gears
Plastic gears are essentially transmission components made from engineered polymers, their core value lying in their lightweight design and exceptionally quiet operation. Compared to traditional metal gears, they perform superiorly in corrosion-resistant and humidity-sensitive environments. Produced using injection molding, daily output can reach 30,000 units.
Currently, plastic gears are finding increasing use in everything from automotive cockpits and precision medical devices to smart homes and robotic joints.
As an experienced plastic gear manufacturer, LVMA delivers precision-molded components and customized gearing solutions tailored to each industry we work with.
Main Types of Plastic Gears

Spur gears are the most common gear type. They feature straight teeth parallel to the shaft axis and are ideal for simple speed reduction and torque transfer applications.

Helical gears use angled teeth for smoother engagement, reduced noise, and improved load capacity compared with spur gears.

Worm gear systems consist of a worm shaft and worm wheel, allowing large speed reduction ratios in compact spaces. They are commonly used in lifting devices, conveyors, and seat adjustment systems.

Bevel gears transmit motion between intersecting shafts, usually at 90 degrees. They are often used to change rotational direction.

Planetary gear systems combine a sun gear, planet gears, and ring gear to deliver high torque in a compact design.

Internal gears have teeth on the inside diameter and are commonly used in planetary gear assemblies.

Custom molded compound gears combine multiple gears, pulleys, or cams into one component, reducing assembly time and lowering production costs.

The most distinctive feature of crown gears (i.e., face gears) is their vertical tooth structure. Their teeth stand upright directly on the end face of the disk, rather than being distributed in a tapered shape with an incline.

The biggest advantage of double helical gears (herringbone gears) lies in their self-balancing. They solve the axial load problem through symmetrical design.
Advantages of Plastic Gears
Lightweight Construction
Small plastic gears significantly reduce component weight, helping improve efficiency in portable devices and automotive applications.
Low Noise Operation
Plastic materials naturally absorb vibration, making gears quieter than metal alternatives.
Corrosion Resistance
Unlike steel gears, plastic gears do not rust and perform well in humid or chemically exposed environments.
Cost-Effective Mass Production
Injection molding enables consistent, high-volume manufacturing at low unit cost, especially for small plastic gears used in electronic products.
Design Flexibility
Complex geometries, integrated hubs, multiple gear stages, and custom features can be molded into one part.
Common Materials for Custom Plastic Gears
| Material | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Flexural Modulus (MPa) / HDT (°C) | Key Gear Advantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acetal (POM) | 60–70 | Flexural Modulus: 2,500–3,100 | Low friction and minimal moisture uptake ensure consistent tooth geometry and quiet, low-wear meshing. |
| Nylon (PA) | 60–85 | HDT (1.8 MPa): 80–100 | Good toughness and fatigue strength handle cyclic loads and damp vibration in gear trains. |
| ABS | 40–52 | Flexural Modulus: 1,800–2,500 | Cost-effective for low‑speed, light‑duty gears where molding efficiency matters. |
| PC / Reinforced Plastics | 60–70 | HDT: 130–135 | High impact resistance protects teeth during sudden stops or shock loads. |
| Custom Filled Materials (e.g., PBT‑GF30) | ~115 | HDT (1.8 MPa): ~200 | Glass or lubricant fillers raise stiffness and wear life for higher‑load gear applications. |
